Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the different surgical techniques and materials in patients operated for ptosis.

Materials and methods: Thirty-five eyelids of 25 patients (15 males, 10 females; mean age 38.8 years; range, 3 to 78 years) were operated with a diagnosis of ptosis at Göztepe Training and Research Hospital Ophthalmology clinic between October 2008 and November 2009 and the results were analyzed prospectively.

Results: Ptosis type was congenital in 10 patients (6 myogenic, 3 aponeurotic, and 1 neurogenic) and acquired in 15 patients (14 aponeurotic and 1 neurogenic). Seventeen patients with aponeurotic ptosis underwent levator aponeurosis surgery, seven patients with poor levator function underwent frontal suspension surgery, and one patient with neurogenic (Marcus Gunn jaw-winking) ptosis underwent combined levator resection and frontal suspension surgery. The desired lid level was achieved in 22 patients (88%). Average duration of follow-up was 8.5 months (3 to 13 months). During follow-up, recurrence developed in two (5.7%) of 35 eyes.

Conclusion: Clinical evaluation is important in deciding on the surgical method to be performed for ptosis. Results of surgeries with the correct indication according to the pathogenesis are quite satisfactory.
